Our Story
“Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite”
Every night I promised my three-year old daughter that bed bugs didn’t really bite little girls. I told her that they may tickle a little, but only if she was up past her bedtime. Fast forward 5 years to the summer of 2006 when I read on Yahoo that there really are bed bugs that try to bite people while they’re sleeping! My daughter didn’t believe me (she didn’t believe the bedtime part either anymore) so I printed out a picture of the red creepy bug to prove it to her.
Shortly thereafter, my medical supply business started selling mattress encasements to water-proof and allergy-proof mattresses. However, most of the calls we received for these encasements were from people with bed bugs in their bedroom. Since the mattress encasements are “certified bed bug proof” I was asked, “If I buy an encasement for my mattress, will that prevent me from getting bitten by bed bugs?”, which sounded reasonable to me. It turns out, I was completely wrong. I learned pretty quickly that mattress encasements just prevent you from having to replace your mattress, but the bed bugs will still sleep anywhere else in the bedroom and will easily crawl up to 20 feet at 3am to feed on unsuspecting people. I began to check for bed bugs whenever traveling and found them under my mattress on a cruise vacation. The cruiseline wanted me to sleep in the room even after bed bugs were found.
It was then when I began my quest to find a way to really prevent people from getting bed bugs. To this date, nearly 10 years after the US infestation ballooned again, all experts can offer is advice on how to look for them and who to call to get rid of them. This is not good enough considering how miserable it is to live and sleep through this process.
After much research and development, I am proud to introduce BugZip® Luggage Encasements. There will never be a way to 100% prevent bed bugs from latching on to your clothes and coming home with you, but using BugZip® diligently when traveling, along with common sense precautionary measures, will allow anyone to travel with peace of mind that their belongings are very safe from bed bugs.

My grandmother once showed me a brochure her apartment complex management company passed out explaining their view on how to prevent bed bugs. The brochure stated that by removing clothes from the floors and vacuuming the base boards and carpeting, one can prevent an infestation. I explained to her that if they were in the base boards and carpet, they would also be in the bed, closet, dresser drawers, and all over the bedroom, so these steps will not prevent getting bitten.
She responded with a story about her growing up in New York City in the 1920s and how all this talk about bed bugs had brought back memories of her family’s daily fight with them. She recalled that every morning her mother would check the sheets and vacuum the bed to get the bugs. They mostly spoke Yiddish at the time, so the chant was “Oy Oy Vantzen!”; “Vantzen” being Yiddish for “bed bugs”.
In honor of my grandmother’s struggles against bed bugs, I have named my company Vantzen Products, Inc., and our mission is to be an innovator in bed bug prevention. BugZip® is our first attempt to stop the bed bugs in their tracks.
Sincerely,
Adam Greenberg, President
